Electric Football?
Elton John - Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player
Elton John and the early seventies, a time when toy companies were
hopelessly designing high tech products such as the incredible "Electronic
CFL Football" by Coleco. This game reminded me of that good old joke/card
game called "52 Card Pick Up". You know you'd challenge you friend with
"hey, wanna play 52 Card Pick Up?" and he'd say "sure". So you would rifle
the deck of cards around the room and say "Ok, pick them up!" Well as you
can imagine this one usually ended up in a brawl of sorts but the Electronic
CFL Football defied all human sensibility. There was no joke, no skill, no
real entertainment.
The scaled down, regulation, CFL playing field was this colourful metal
board surrounded by a rim. Each team had the standard 12 players. You would
spend about 10 minutes lining the players up, then the team on offence would
turn the board "on". At this time the 110 volts of raw electric power would
be altered to vibrate this playing field and make a noise mush like rocks in
a glass blender. You would sit and watch in fascination as these player
moved randomly around the table until...play stopped due to someone going
off side, the ball went out of bounds or your player ran into your own end
zone.
This retarded football was usually out for about three plays each and we
lost interest. Keep in mind three plays each took about 3 and 1/2 hours! I
guess when you are a pre-teen you are still fascinated by bright colours and
a game that plugs in, cause other than that this one was useless.
